Our performance has been evaluated, reviewed and measured through a range of reports, evaluations and impact assessments since our inception in 2018.

Impact reporting allows us to do more than just present numbers and statistics. In our view, the impact reporting journey is where the numbers come alive revealing a story of insights, synergies and unintended consequences. This page has a range of substantive impact and evaluation summaries and documents available for review.

Dynamic Evaluation

To measure the impact at the programme-level and how we are tracking towards the systems change we want to bring about, Reconnecting Northland has kicked off a Dynamic Evaluation: a system's approach to monitoring, evaluation, and learning adopted to understand the impact of the multiple interrelated initiatives, solutions, and innovations, including synergies and unintended consequences.

The first phase of the Dynamic Evaluation has been completed by an independent evaluator to set and document the baseline data that will be tested in subsequent phases.

The Dynamic Evaluation will not be a one off -- Reconnecting Northland plans to keep it alive by conducting it in phases that will each look at a set of different indicators. Once all indicators have been evaluated, Reconnecting Northland will circle back to the start and continue to track its progress and adopt learnings.

Te Kete Hononga Trial evaluation

The Te Kete Hononga trial evaluation report was conducted by independent evaluators Awa Associates following the end of the 18-month trial in June 2024. A bespoke kaupapa Māori metric/scale was developed, Whakatō Kākano, and utilised to measure the trial’s progress and impact. Two Key Evaluation Questions explored the extent to which training and support connected services and improved access for communities, and whether an enabling collective impact towards socio-ecological outcomes was achieved.

Overall, the evaluation found that Te Kete Hononga had made good progress during the trial period, with effective changes created along the way. A series of recommendations were made for Reconnecting Northland to enhance further and future delivery of Te Kete Hononga.

Te Mahi Tiaki Taiao research report

Te Mahi Tiaki Taiao Research Report is a piece of action research conducted by the Biological Heritage Science Challenge about the Te Kete Hononga trial. The research is one of three exemplar studies of restoration collectives focused on supporting co-development of exemplar restoration projects that showcase successful regeneration of mātauranga and bioheritage.

The report demonstrates that Te Kete Hononga and Reconnecting Northland's leadership are growing the foundations in nature groups to scale up restoration, which will not only benefit the ecosystems, but also the wellbeing of the people within them.
